Before there were computer generated 3D models, people used to make posable and static models of characters out of modelling clay so they had a solid reference and could light it how they wanted. Using the movable pose 3D models to get the general feel of a pose is also a non brainer. Making a 3d model of a background which you can rotate and trace at various angles for use in something like a comic is a genius idea, comics are massively time consuming, and anything that speeds the process is good in my books - there is enough complicated stuff to work on I don't really see it as laziness, you're just bypassing the use of a drawing board and rulers in favour of something which makes that tedious work faster.
